Whether you’re at home or away, it’s always important to be vigilant and ensure your heating oil is secure. Here are 3 simple ways to help protect your home:

1. Close Shackle Locks

A good thief will have tools to help them access your oil. Therefore good quality locks are crucial. Several police forces across the UK recommend using close shackle padlocks. This is because it is more difficult for a bolt cropper to gain a good grip.

2. Work With Your Neighbours

Good neighbours can be extremely helpful, particularly when it comes to keeping an eye out for suspicious vehicles in the area. Chances are if they live close by they may also use heating oil, so you can help them in return. Whilst it’s never a good idea to publicise the fact that your home will be empty if you’re heading off on holiday, it is a good idea to let a trusted neighbour know if you’re away. That way they can help by keeping an eye on your property.

3. Security Lighting

Whether you have flood lights, or subtle low energy lighting, they can both be effective. It is important to consider the positioning of your security lights, so that you cover both the tank and access points to your property. A simple light picking up an unwanted visitor on arrival, may be enough to prevent them trying any further.

Don’t Forget Your Insurance

As well as keeping your heating oil secure, it’s important to remember to take out adequate insurance cover. Whilst you would want to be covered for the financial loss if your heating oil is stolen, you also need to be covered for any damage which may be caused in the process. This includes the risk of oil being spilled on your property. OFTEC also have some handy advice on helping to keep your heating oil secure here.
