Heating oil can be an attractive target for thieves as many homes supplied with alternatives to mains gas are in more rural locations. Domestic heating oil tanks can often contain hundreds of pounds worth of oil. Like anything else valuable in your home, it’s imperative to make sure you take steps to prevent heating oil theft. That way you’re not left stuck without oil or out of pocket financially. Whilst it’s always best to follow advice from your insurance company and local police force, we’ve put together some tips to keep your oil secure and reduce heating oil theft at home.

Where your oil tank is located can have an impact on whether thieves will want to take the risk. Domestic heating oil tanks located close to or in view of the property are often seen by thieves as too risky as they won’t want to be seen. Oil tanks are often located behind the property and hidden so that you don’t have to look at an unsightly tank. Whilst this keeps it out of view of potential thieves, it does give them the advantage of not being seen. So, it’s best to make sure it’s well-lit and not too far from the house. Locating the tank close to a road, path or drive makes it easier for thieves to gain access quickly. However, it’s important to consider that your tank needs to still be accessible for delivery.

It’s important to consider all the factors mentioned above and try to gain a balance when considering the location of your oil tank.

Thieves will be equipped with tools to try and gain access to your oil. So, it’s important that you use good quality locks for your oil tank and outbuildings / garage. Closed shackle padlocks have less shackle exposure, making it more difficult for tools to break them.

Oil Level Monitors

Remote electronic oil level gauges are useful as an alert. An alarm will sound if your oil level drops suddenly or falls below a certain level. These are handy for several reasons such as alerting to theft, leaks and as reminders to top up your tank.

Security Lighting

Well placed security lights can quickly highlight suspicious activity on your property. Covering both your tank and access points to your property will help to prevent unwanted visitors.

Defensive Planting

Planting prickly shrubs and bushes around your oil tank can help deter thieves. They also help improve the look of an unsightly tank in your garden.

Laying down gravel near your tank and/or the walkway towards it will likely act as a deterrent because the intruder will not want to make a noise and draw attention to themselves.

Installing fences can also be a good deterrent as it all makes the job more difficult for potential thieves. However, it’s important to make sure your tank is still accessible for heating oil deliveries.

As technology has advanced over recent years, CCTV systems have become increasingly common as there are more options available at different price points. Although it’s important to consider factors such as positioning, lighting and data storage to ensure that your security cameras are effective.

Whilst there are several steps you can take to help reduce the risk of heating oil theft at home, it’s important to be vigilant. If you notice any suspicious vehicles close to your property, then be sure to take a note of their details and report it to the police. Click here for more heating oil tips and advice.
